Brain, Nerve and Spinal Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Bilal Kılıçarslan drew attention to the increase in motorcycle and water sports accidents during the summer season, emphasizing that helmet use is of vital importance.
“Wearing a helmet in hot weather during the summer may be uncomfortable for some people. However, a short period of discomfort can prevent serious lifelong health problems,” said Op. Dr. Kılıçarslan, noting that helmets are the most effective protection against head and neck trauma.
Kılıçarslan stated that the majority of emergency room cases during the summer are due to motorcycle, bicycle, electric scooter and water sports accidents, and added that traumas can lead to serious consequences:
“It is possible to encounter outcomes such as brain hemorrhage, loss of consciousness, memory problems and permanent paralysis. For this reason, not only when riding motorcycles but also when cycling, using scooters or engaging in water sports, helmets and other protective equipment must be used.”
Op. Dr. Kılıçarslan also emphasized that helmets suitable for the child’s age and body structure should always be used under parental supervision.
“Let us remember; traumas are preventable accidents. A helmet is not just an accessory, but a safety measure that protects life,” he concluded.
