Neurology Specialist Dr. Ömür Atacan Atasoy from Denizli Özel Egekent Hospital emphasized that caffeine consumption should be gradually reduced before fasting to prevent headaches and migraines caused by fasting.

Warning about migraines, which become even more unbearable with hunger during Ramadan, Specialist Dr. Ömür Atacan Atasoy from Özel Egekent Hospital gave recommendations on how to spend Ramadan without migraines. Highlighting the importance of monitoring caffeine consumption, Dr. Atasoy said: “Those who frequently consume caffeinated foods and drinks may experience withdrawal syndrome when they cannot consume anything for more than 16 hours. This condition can trigger headaches and migraines. To avoid withdrawal syndrome, they should gradually reduce their daily intake before fasting and consume a small amount between evening and sahur time to maintain a stable blood level.”

Explaining ways to prevent migraines, Dr. Atasoy said: “Headaches caused by fasting can be successfully prevented with long-acting medications such as naproxen or similar drugs. If fasting-related headache presents with throbbing features similar to migraines or occurs in someone with a history of migraines, a short preventive treatment with painkillers such as rizatriptan or eletriptan, as recommended for menstrual migraine, can be applied.”
