Op. Dr. Habibe Radiye Akgün, Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist at Özel Egekent Hospital, provided important information about vaginal yeast infections caused by fungal cells, which frequently affect women and cause itching. Stating that many women may experience this condition at some point in their lives, Dr. Akgün emphasized that the disease should be taken seriously, as untreated infections can lead to infertility. She explained that vaginal yeast is caused by a type of yeast cell called Candida, which can exist in all women without causing problems; however, when its quantity increases, changes in vaginal pH and disruption of the flora can lead to infection.

Dr. Akgün noted that vaginal yeast in the vagina and vulva causes itching and discharge, and added: “Other symptoms of the disease include thick, white, curd-like discharge, pain during intercourse, vaginal sensitivity, and burning sensation during urination.”

“Stress can also trigger vaginal yeast”
Addressing the causes of the disease, Op. Dr. Habibe Radiye Akgün emphasized that, just as stress can trigger many illnesses today, it can also contribute to the development of vaginal yeast. She added that pregnancy is another factor in the development of the disease and said: “Low immunity, nutritional disorders, diabetes, menstrual irregularities, hormone medications, birth control pills, and antibiotic use can all lead to the disease.”
