Egekent Hospital Pediatrics Specialist Dr. M. Hafit Arvas

“Growth is a health indicator for children”

Denizli Özel Egekent Hospital’s Dr. M. Hafit Arvas stated that while hereditary factors can influence children’s growth, external factors such as nutrition also play a significant role.

On the occasion of April 15 – Growth Monitoring Day, Dr. Arvas warned parents about the importance of tracking children’s growth. He said:
“If a child’s growth does not progress within a certain pattern, it may be a sign of a developmental problem. With early diagnosis, the source of the issue can be identified. It could be hereditary, or it might stem from external factors such as nutrition, infections, or psychosocial reasons. If external factors are involved, preventive measures can be taken. If growth lags behind peers due to hormonal, metabolic, or chronic diseases, timely treatment can enable the child to reach the same level as their peers.”

**What needs to be done for healthy growth in children**
Addressing the steps needed for healthy growth, Dr. Arvas advised parents:
“For healthy growth, nutrition is extremely important. Instead of fast food, a diet rich in vegetables and fruits should be preferred, and children should be kept away from processed foods as much as possible. Sleep patterns should also be regulated. Especially sleep between 8–11 p.m. plays a crucial role in children’s development.”

Emphasizing that not only physical but also psychological factors affect children’s growth, Dr. Arvas added:
“It is important for children to be able to express themselves and have their needs met for their healthy development.”
