Emphasizing that children should enjoy their vacation as a true holiday, Denizli Private Egekent Hospital Psychologist Psk. Özlem Çalhan Özel addressed the questions parents have in mind about how to plan their children’s vacation program with the start of the mid-term break.
Pointing out that the concept of vacation is often used as study time, Psychologist Özlem Çalhan Özel noted that children undergo an intensive academic schedule during the school term. Özel stated, “After working intensively for a period, it is the children’s natural right to rest. However, parents and teachers can put pressure on children regarding homework and lessons during the vacation. This can cause children to lose interest in studying. Children should enjoy their vacation as a real holiday. Allowing children to rest and breathe during the break helps them become more motivated for the next term. At the same time, a suitable program can be prepared to ensure they don’t completely disconnect from studies and gradually ease them back into lessons.”
“Don’t leave your children in front of screens”
Addressing the excessive screen time during vacation, Psk. Özel emphasized the need to set limits for children. She noted that vacation is not only for studying or resting, stating, “Children should both have fun and engage in activities that stimulate their mental development during the break. They should be guided in this regard. By playing games together, participating in social activities (theater, cinema, trips, etc.), and engaging in hands-on activities, children can spend their time productively.”
“Do not compare your child with anyone”
Warning parents about poor report cards, Psk. Özlem Çalhan Özel noted that pressuring children on this matter can have the opposite effect, and that support can be provided to improve children’s academic performance. She added that parents often compare their children with peers or siblings, and gave the following advice:
“Children should not be compared with anyone in any aspect, not just academics. Such comparisons destroy motivation and make them more frustrated. The reasons behind a child’s poor academic performance should be identified. You can seek help from an expert, and by addressing the negative factors affecting them and providing the necessary support, it is possible to improve their level of success.”
