Specialist in Pediatrics and Child Health at Özel Egekent Hospital, Dr. Yavuz Selim Güler:
“Breast milk is a powerful factor that protects babies from infections.”
Highlighting the importance of breast milk during Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7, Dr. Yavuz Selim Güler emphasized its impact on infant health. He underlined that breastfeeding is the most valuable bond between mother and baby and contributes significantly to the baby’s growth and development. He reminded that babies should be exclusively fed with breast milk for the first six months, noting that breast milk fully meets all the baby’s needs during this period.
Regarding the crucial first week after birth, Dr. Güler stated: “The composition of breast milk is different in the first week. The milk produced by the mother during this period is called colostrum. It contains substances that protect the baby against infections. This milk is vital when the baby is most vulnerable.”
Breast milk nourishes both body and mind
Dr. Güler explained that breast milk is a unique food for babies due to its content of proteins, energy, fats, carbohydrates, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and hormones, and that it is rich in unsaturated fatty acids necessary for the brain and nervous system. He noted that children fed with breast milk have stronger immunity and experience fewer common infant skin problems such as diaper rash and allergies. This also helps babies be calmer and sleep more comfortably.
Dr. Güler added that breastfeeding provides many benefits for the mother as well, giving the following advice:
“Breastfeeding strengthens the bond between mother and baby. It is also effective in losing pregnancy weight. It protects the mother against many health problems, including ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and osteoporosis. For healthy breastfeeding and good milk quality, mothers should consume plenty of fluids and maintain a balanced diet.”
