Prof. Dr. Seyide Soysal explained that endometriosis occurs when endometrial tissue, which lines the inside of the uterus, is located outside the uterus. She noted that it is unclear how this tissue settles outside the uterus; endometriomas (chocolate cysts) can form in the ovaries, peritoneal endometriosis in the abdominal lining, and deep infiltrative endometriosis in the rectovaginal space.

Endometriosis (Chocolate Cyst) Can Be a Significant Obstacle to Your Pregnancy
Addressing the symptoms of endometriosis, Prof. Dr. Seyide Soysal said, “Endometriosis manifests as menstrual cramps, pain during and after intercourse, painful diarrhea or constipation during menstruation. However, patients sometimes mistake the pain they experience for normal menstrual cramps and may delay treatment. Therefore, it is important not to neglect routine check-ups.”

She added that the most important symptom of the disease is difficulty in conceiving, noting that many patients presenting with infertility were found to have endometriosis. She emphasized that these symptoms should not be ignored and treatment should be provided. Prof. Dr. Soysal stated that the course of the disease is crucial in its treatment: “With early diagnosis, symptoms can be reduced with medication, but if the disease has progressed and the patient’s symptoms are severe, treatment is performed surgically. In endometriosis, the preferred surgical method is generally laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery.”
