A patient diagnosed with a deadly level of pulmonary embolism in Denizli was brought to Özel Egekent Hospital and, due to having undergone surgery shortly before, was able to hold on to life thanks to the smart treatment applied.
Fatma Akgöz, 37, from the Çivril district of Denizli, applied to the Emergency Service of Çivril State Hospital with complaints of shortness of breath, severe oxygen deficiency, and general condition deterioration. During the examination there, it was decided that she should be transferred to a hospital with greater facilities, and she was taken by ambulance to Denizli Özel Egekent Hospital. Admitted to intensive care, tomography imaging revealed clots in the vessels of both lungs (massive pulmonary embolism). The patient, whose life was at risk, was closely monitored in the intensive care unit by Specialist Dr. Gökhan Peker and Specialist Dr. Taner Taşyüz.
For the patient, whose drug treatment was risky due to recent surgery, a catheter was placed into the main pulmonary artery using a special device (EKOS) at Özel Egekent Hospital. Ultrasonic waves were applied to break the clot into small pieces. This allowed the clot-dissolving medication, which normally requires a high dose, to be administered over 48 hours. With the smart treatment applied by the expert team at Egekent Hospital, the patient regained health and held on to life.
Specialist Dr. Gökhan Peker, explaining the monitoring process, said: “The patient needed to be quickly connected to a respirator and start clot-dissolving (thrombolytic) drugs. However, since the patient had undergone varicose vein surgery a week earlier, high-dose thrombolytic drugs could have endangered her life. Therefore, we consulted our cardiology specialist Dr. Fatih Çam and planned thrombolytic treatment via pulmonary angiography with selective pulmonary artery (AC artery angiography) administration.”
Cardiology Specialist Dr. Fatih Çam stated that treatment began after the patient and her relatives consented: “We completed the treatment 48 hours later under angiography guidance. Subsequent imaging showed that the clot had dissolved, the sudden onset right heart failure had significantly improved, and the pulmonary pressures of the patient, who had developed severe pulmonary hypertension, returned to normal.”
Specialist Dr. Taner Taşyüz emphasized that the patient’s oxygen level was very low even with oxygen and mechanical ventilation support: “We were very happy to discharge our patient five days later with normal oxygen levels.”
Halil Akgöz, who feared losing his spouse, expressed gratitude: “May God bless our doctors; thanks to them, my wife regained her health. We are very thankful to the doctors and nurses who cared for us,” he said, thanking the Egekent Hospital team.“`
