Egekent Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Op. Dr. Arif Saylan stated that urinary tract infections, which women frequently experience, can occur more often especially during pregnancy, adding, “A urinary tract infection during pregnancy can put the baby’s life at risk.”
Providing information about urinary tract infections that can endanger both the mother’s and the baby’s health during the challenging period of pregnancy, Egekent Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Op. Dr. Arif Saylan said, “During pregnancy, women undergo physiological changes, which can expose them to many health problems. One of the most important of these problems is urinary tract infection. Starting from the 6th week of pregnancy, the risk of contracting a urinary tract infection increases. As the uterus grows, it puts pressure on the bladder. As this pressure increases, the bladder cannot empty completely, leading to a risk of infection. If untreated, this infection can progress to a kidney infection. The high fever caused by this can trigger contractions in the uterus, increasing the likelihood of preterm birth or miscarriage.”
“Urinary tract infections can have different causes”
Mentioning that urinary tract infections can originate from the bladder as well as from other causes, Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Op. Dr. Arif Saylan said, “During pregnancy, infections can be bladder-related, but there are other factors that may cause infections as well. Examples include infections caused by bacteria from the intestines, infections resulting from hormonal changes, infections related to sexual intercourse, infections caused by insufficient hygiene, and infections due to kidney stones.”
“Pay attention to the symptoms”
Emphasizing the importance of paying attention to the symptoms of urinary tract infections, Op. Dr. Arif Saylan issued the following warnings to expectant mothers:
“If a person feels burning and pain while urinating, experiences groin and kidney pain, genital itching, and high fever, then there is a urinary tract infection, and they must consult a specialist immediately.” Highlighting that urinary tract infection is a condition that should not be neglected, Op. Dr. Arif Saylan also mentioned preventive measures: “Daily water consumption is important to prevent urinary tract infections. Care should be taken with genital hygiene. Urine should not be held for long periods. In addition, choosing comfortable clothing and maintaining good nutrition are important factors in preventing infection.”
