Denizli Private Egekent Hospital Medical Oncology Specialist Dr. Nail Özhan stated that cancer patients should consult a specialist before fasting.
With the approach of Ramadan, many people express their intention to fast. However, for cancer patients, this requires special attention. Dr. Nail Özhan emphasized that individuals undergoing cancer treatment must consult their doctors before deciding to fast. He said, “Fasting can help rest and rejuvenate the body, but each cancer patient’s situation is different. During cancer treatment, nutrition and fluid intake are very important. Patients receiving active treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy may face significant health risks if they fast. Therefore, each individual’s health condition should be carefully evaluated.”
Pointing out that “Although positive health effects of fasting are observed, the bodies of cancer patients are usually weak and sensitive”, Dr. Özhan issued the following warnings:
“Patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy should not reduce fluid intake or change their nutritional routines. Changes in eating and sleeping patterns during fasting can disrupt the body’s balance. Constipation, fluid and salt loss may weaken the immune system and cause stress. There are situations where fasting can negatively affect treatment processes. Therefore, it is crucial that patients carefully evaluate whether they should fast or not.”
