Dietitian Müge Mertcan from Denizli Private Egekent Hospital stated that ashura, the symbol of unity and abundance, is both nutritious and a source of healing with the many nutrients it contains.

Egekent Hospital Dietitian Müge Mertcan shared information about ashura, one of our traditional desserts, on Ashura Day. Mertcan said, “With ashura, the symbol of abundance, our sharing also increases. Ashura is one of our traditional desserts with a rich content of legumes, dried fruits, grains, and nuts. With its fruits rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, it takes its place in our diet during the month of ashura when consumed in balance.”

Listing the benefits of ashura, Dietitian Müge Mertcan mentioned that it also has a positive effect for those experiencing constipation. Mertcan said, “With the variety of foods included, ashura is rich in vitamins and minerals. It contains vitamins A, E, and C. It gives energy, strengthens the immune system. Since it also includes dried fruits such as grapes and apricots, ashura helps relieve constipation.”

“Be careful about excessive consumption”

Although ashura is a nutritious dessert, the amount consumed should be monitored, said Dietitian Müge Mertcan, noting that diabetic patients should be careful due to its high sugar content. She also pointed out that excessive consumption is an issue to be considered in terms of calories, and gave the following warnings:

“Due to the sugar used in ashura as well as the fruits and nuts, calorie intake can be high. For this reason, it is beneficial to balance the portion. Considering the ingredients of ashura and health, the amount of sugar should definitely be taken into account. The sugar can be reduced while increasing the amount of fruit and cinnamon. Additionally, for those who want to prepare it without sugar, natural sweeteners such as honey can be used as alternatives.”
