A 3-centimeter tumor in the urinary tract of a patient with blood in the urine and pain was successfully removed by Urology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Taha Numan Yıkılmaz at Özel Egekent Hospital in Denizli.

Metin Öğünç, a resident of Denizli, had been suffering from blood in the urine and pain for some time and had visited various healthcare centers for a year without results before turning to Özel Denizli Egekent Hospital. During a detailed examination conducted by Urology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Taha Numan Yıkılmaz, tumors were detected in his bladder and urinary tract. To relieve his urgent complaints, surgery was performed, and the 3-centimeter tumor in the ureter was successfully removed by Assoc. Prof. Yıkılmaz and his team.

Assuring that the patient was discharged in good health, Assoc. Prof. Yıkılmaz stated: “Metin came to our clinic three weeks ago with blood in his urine and pain on the right side of his body. We performed an ultrasound and found a 3-centimeter tumor lesion in the ureter. Ureteral tumors are not very common. After detecting it on ultrasound, we performed endoscopic imaging (cystoscopy) to confirm the diagnosis. During this procedure, we found various tumors in the bladder as well as a blocked tumor in the ureter. We removed all tumors from the bladder, took samples from the urinary tract tumors, and sent them to pathology. The pathology results showed that the bladder tumors were low-grade, but the ureter tumors were high-grade. Treatment for ureter tumors is aggressive, meaning the tumor and surrounding tissue may need to be extensively removed because it recurs frequently and can rapidly spread. Therefore, we had to remove the kidney and urinary tract completely.”

“Handled with care to preserve the healthy kidney”
Assoc. Prof. Yıkılmaz explained the details of the operation for the patient’s recovery: “Metin has chronic kidney disease. He has been under nephrology follow-up at another center for a year. He is not on dialysis but his kidney values were borderline high. Therefore, we held a small council with our anesthesia and internal medicine doctors to plan the approach. Since the ureter tumor was advanced, we had to remove the kidney. Removing only the right ureter without the kidney could have caused bigger problems. We performed the surgery laparoscopically, removing the right kidney and part of the bladder while preserving the other kidney. By the third day after surgery, his condition was very good. He ate and is scheduled for discharge. Currently, only a urinary catheter is in place. The right kidney was completely blocked due to the tumor. Removing the tumor-affected kidney improved the function of the remaining kidney, and our urine tests and output are better than before surgery.”

“They couldn’t detect my condition”
Grateful for his recovery, patient Metin Öğünç thanked Assoc. Prof. Taha Numan Yıkılmaz and his team: “I had blood in my urine. I visited several doctors and even had a check-up at another hospital, but no one detected my illness except Talha Bey. My problem wasn’t solved at first. I don’t know how they couldn’t see the 3-centimeter tumor. Thanks to Dr. Taha, he looked and even he was surprised that no one had seen my condition. Now I am fully recovered.”
