Warning against sinusitis, Denizli Özel Egekent Hospital Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist Op. Dr. İsmet Çerçi said: “Sinusitis, which is accompanied by nasal congestion and discharge as well as a feeling of pain and fullness in the face, seriously reduces quality of life.”

With the onset of winter, upper respiratory tract diseases increase, and sinusitis ranks at the top of these illnesses. However, it is not fully known that untreated sinusitis can cause serious complications. If not diagnosed and treated correctly, sinusitis can lead to pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, and middle ear infections. Sometimes it can also cause problems in organs such as the eyes or brain. Denizli Özel Egekent Hospital ENT Specialist Op. Dr. İsmet Çerçi said: “Sinusitis, which closely affects quality of life, is most common in winter. The main symptoms of sinusitis include nasal congestion, sore throat, mild fever, fatigue and difficulty in adaptation, throbbing headache around the eyes and face, yellow-green nasal and postnasal discharge, bad breath, and taste disorders. The pain is usually felt in the front part of the face. Such headaches are severe in the morning and tend to decrease throughout the day.”

Explaining the precautions to be taken against sinusitis, which directly affects patients’ quality of life, Dr. İsmet Çerçi said: “If you have an allergic constitution, your risk of sinusitis is higher. Therefore, do not neglect your allergy treatment and keep it under control. Since cigarette smoke and polluted air can trigger sinusitis, avoid such environments. Cigarette smoke and polluted air particles can cause inflammation in the airways, aggravating the disease. Maintaining appropriate humidity levels in the air you breathe can also prevent sinusitis. If sinusitis becomes chronic and permanent blockages occur in the openings of the sinuses into the nasal cavity, surgical treatment is required. If there is also severe nasal allergy and the patient is not well monitored with medication after surgery, sinusitis may recur.”
