Listing the most important causes of back and waist pain, Op. Dr. Özdemir Öztekin said: “Long hours of sitting, irregular eating habits, inactivity, weight gain, obesity, joint diseases, accidents, and sports injuries are among the most common causes of chronic back pain. Sleeping on very soft mattresses causes the body to sink too much, leading the spine to sink and its natural posture to deteriorate. On very hard mattresses, the lumbar curve is not supported. In both cases, back pain becomes inevitable. In addition to mattress selection, pillow choice is also important. Sleeping on an excessively high pillow can cause back pain. On the other hand, sleeping without a pillow leaves the neck unsupported, leading to stiffness and pain.”
Op. Dr. Özdemir Öztekin gave the following recommendations to relieve back and waist pain: “The height of the work desk and chair should be adjusted correctly, and the chair we sit on should support our back. To ensure balanced weight distribution, use a double-strap backpack instead of single-strap bags. When lifting something, bend your knees instead of bending from the waist to transfer the weight to the upper legs. Do not leave your hair wet, and while sleeping, support your legs with a pillow for lumbar support.”
