Prof. Dr. Bilgin Emrecan, Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist at Denizli Özel Egekent Hospital, informed that carotid artery stenosis is a dangerous condition that can result in loss of life and stroke.
Defining carotid artery occlusion, Prof. Dr. Bilgin Emrecan said: “It occurs when the blood circulation to a part of the brain is interrupted for more than a few minutes, leading to the destruction of brain cells in that region. Even if temporary, symptoms such as numbness, weakness in arms and legs, vision loss (curtain falling over the eye), or slurred speech may indicate carotid artery occlusion or stenosis.”
Some of these symptoms may be temporary and may resolve within minutes. This condition is called a transient ischemic attack (TIA). The clot may dissolve on its own or with treatment, restoring proper blood flow. However, if it does not resolve, it can lead to permanent stroke or paralysis. Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and death, and carotid artery stenosis is one of its most important and preventable causes. It is also the third most common cause of death after heart disease and cancer, he added.
Emphasizing the importance of regular check-ups, Prof. Dr. Bilgin Emrecan stated: “Patients with high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and those with a family history of stroke or heart attack should definitely undergo a Doppler ultrasound, commonly known as color Doppler ultrasound, for carotid artery evaluation.”
