Denizli Private Egekent Hospital Dietitian Müge Mertcan provided information on what should be considered in order to avoid health problems after festive days spent together.
Holidays are special days when loved ones come together and tables are set. Since meat consumption is high during Eid al-Adha, Dietitian Müge Mertcan said, “During Eid al-Adha, meat consumption increases, leading to a tendency for a single type of diet. In addition to meat dishes, nutrition should be diversified with vegetables, legumes, and grains, and the daily required water intake should not be neglected.” Warning about the immediate consumption of freshly slaughtered meat, Dietitian Mertcan said, “Freshly slaughtered meat should not be consumed immediately. The toughness of meat from newly slaughtered animals causes difficulties both in cooking and digestion. This situation leads to problems such as bloating and indigestion. The meat should be rested for at least 24 hours.”
“The Preparation Stage of Meat is Important”
During Eid al-Adha, while preparations are made and meat is cooked, necessary health steps should also be followed. Dietitian Müge Mertcan emphasized that these steps are very important in ensuring that joyful holiday days remain as pleasant memories. Highlighting the importance of the storage and cooking stages of meat, Dietitian Müge Mertcan said, “Meat should not be thawed directly after being taken out of the freezer. It should be slowly thawed by placing it in a colder section of the refrigerator. Thawing in hot water is risky for health.”
Addressing the use of cutting boards, Dietitian Mertcan stated that the cutting board used for meat should not be used for cutting vegetables or fruits. She also stressed that the cooking method of meat is an important health step not to be overlooked, saying, “Instead of consuming meat by frying, boiling or grilling methods should be preferred. Especially if meat is cooked on the barbecue, it should not be cooked until it becomes charred.” Healthy and happy holidays to you…
