Baby Born with a Sac on His Back Successfully Treated!
Born with a sac wound on his waist due to the incomplete development of his spine, a baby regained life through a successful operation performed at Private Egekent Hospital in Denizli when he was just one day old after being transferred from Manisa.
In the first baby of Bahadır and Güzel Gürses, it was detected at 6 months of pregnancy that there was an opening in the spinal cord. Immediately transferred to Private Egekent Hospital after birth, the baby was promptly taken into surgery by Neurosurgery Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ergün Karavelioğlu. At just 1 day old, the baby’s exposed nerve sheaths in the waist were closed, and the wound was repaired. Following the operation, the baby was treated in the neonatal intensive care unit and later restored to health, after which baby Masal was handed over to the family.
“Early surgery was essential”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ergün Karavelioğlu, who performed the successful operation, underlined that it was a case requiring early intervention: “When the baby, who was unfortunately born with a sac wound on his waist due to incomplete spinal development in the womb, was brought to our hospital, we immediately performed surgery, closed the exposed nerve sheaths in his waist, and repaired the wound. Without early intervention, infection could have developed, and we might have lost the baby. With our advanced neonatal intensive care and operating room facilities, in experienced hands, we reconnected our baby to life with early surgery.”
“This is a team effort”
Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Yavuz Selim Güler, who carried out the treatment and follow-up of the baby in the neonatal intensive care unit, said: “Early intervention is crucial in such cases. From the moment the baby arrived, we stabilized him and kept him under observation in neonatal intensive care. No complications developed during the surgery, and after the surgery, when the baby was handed over to us, we monitored him for a while on a ventilator. As the baby soon came off the ventilator, and his breathing and general condition were good, we applied antibiotic treatment for a period and then handed him over to his family. This is a team effort, and we are happy to deliver the baby safely to his family.”
Bahadır and Güzel Gürses, who were overjoyed at their baby’s recovery, said: “Since he was our first baby, we were excitedly waiting, but when we learned of this condition, we were very upset. We searched for treatment and met Dr. Ergün. He intervened immediately after birth, and now we are holding our baby healthy in our arms. We sincerely thank him and everyone involved for making us experience this happiness.”
